The worst thing about listening to all 10 "On the spin" has been the way that negatively highlighted great swathes of repetition. Some attention to basic plot detail would be useful (like what I am sure were inexplicable changes in shoe sizes). I am really glad that they've kept the same narrator - as given the style, changes would have grated. In this case the narration is so good that he smooths out a lot of the wrinkles just by the performance, with only some minor fails with certain accents, etc. I went through the whole of this series in a couple of weeks because I enjoyed them so much, there is a blend of elements of action and intrigue although as some reviewers have pointed out, there are all sorts of sometimes quite significant holes in the core plot lines. I gave up Sci-Fi for a very long time, but was brought up on series like the Stainless Steel Rat and Robert Heinlein so I thought I'd dip back in as crime novels have become so dreary and generally dead-ended.

Heartstopper is more than just a graphic novel, it's a much needed counter-narrative that features one of the best romances I've seen put to page, regardless of its intended audience. There certainly is a time and place for all kinds of stories, but when the default narrative for a community is one of tragedy, it can be a heart-breaking experience navigating fiction, especially while young. Heartstopper has its share of bittersweet moments, surely, but Alice Oseman has crafted an optimistic, uplifting, and wholesome love story that is a breath of fresh air after drowning in the waves of doomed romances between LGBTQ+ couples across all media and genres. Stories about the LGBTQ+ community have historically been grim, focusing on the hardships, struggles, and violence that people face simply by existing as queer in the world we live in. In the world of fiction, the space that's been carved out for marginalised people has been a small and uncomfortable one, often lacking in the things other people in society take for granted things like tenderness, hope, and joy. It also felt as though the author was trying too hard with the sex scenes, and there were sooo many… making it a bit boring and so annoying to listen to after a while, even though they were really well written. I personally found the age gap between the MC’s to be an issue (she was 18 (a mere child) and he was 32), so some their interactions were a bit disconnected and frustrating at times. The author’s writing style was really good and did not disappoint, but the storyline, which was loosely based on a modern retelling of Hades and Persephone, was not my favourite… and then again it wasn’t the worst I’ve ever read. Promises and Pomegranates is a full-length, stand-alone dark contemporary romance inspired by the Hades and Persephone myth. The tale of the itinerant prankster Tyll Eulenspiegel (spelled in a million different ways.) has a similar sort of standing in German folklore to that of Robin Hood in England - written versions of the story go back at least to the earliest printed chapbooks, and places all over Germany claim associations with him, but no-one has ever found any convincing evidence that he really existed. Translated from the German by Ross Benjamin Read more The result is both a riveting story and a moving tribute to the power of art in the face of the senseless brutality of history. As a juggler and a jester, Tyll forges his own path through a world devastated by the Thirty Years’ War, evading witch-hunters, escaping a collapsed mine outside a besieged city, and entertaining the exiled King and Queen of Bohemia along the way. After Tyll flees with the baker’s daughter, he falls in with a traveling performer who teaches him his trade. Tyll is a scrawny boy growing up in a quiet village until his father, a miller with a forbidden interest in alchemy and magic, is found out by the church. The New York Times Best Historical Fiction of 2020ĭaniel Kehlmann transports the medieval legend of the trickster Tyll Ulenspiegel to the seventeenth century in an enchanting work of magical realism, macabre humor, and rollicking adventure. |
